Pirates of the New Millenium

written by Oly Gun

The Blue Water Syndicate wrote about the recent acts of piracy against American ships. They had some good points:

The pirates receive millions of dollars in ransom money from ship owners. I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists. Thats exactly what these pirates are, terrorists… These individuals are threatening the international community. Not just the USA, not just their local people, not just anyone, EVERYONE… none of these ships have the ability to defend themselves? I know the pirates are heavily armed, but a large ship should be able to take out a few pangas…

As Americans we have the right to defend ourselves, our homes, our property with . Does this not apply to American vessels traveling the worlds oceans? It seems the cost of arming your ships would be less than paying out ransom money to terrorists.

Firearms Shortage

written by Oly Gun
No comments yet. »

Did you ever think you’d see the day when you couldn’t buy the gun you want?  I mean when it was still legal to do so.

Ever since the election and ammunition have been flying off the shelf at retailers nation wide.  Wholesale distributors are drying up and gun manufacturers are trying to keep up with the demand.

AR-15, AK47, M1 and other “assault rifle” style are impossible to find in stock at local shops and online.  Handguns are following suit.  Certain ammunition is also nowhere to be found.

Walk through any large sporting goods retailer and look st the shelves behind the gun counter and in the ammunition section.  Accessories like high capacity magazines are also few and far between.

Hopefully the manufacturers will catch up soon.  we all deserve access to fair pricing on guns, ammunition, and accessories.

Handgun Ban Lifted, but Seattle Still Moving for Stricter Laws

written by Oly Gun
No comments yet. »

Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled the handgun ban in Washington DC to be unconstitutional.  This is great news for gun rights proponents all over the country worried about possible bans being proposed in the future.

Gun Control advocates still don’t get it.  Here in Seattle the Mayor is still pushing for stricter gun laws limiting possession and ownership of handguns.

Most of these movements seem to be reactions to shootings in public places.  What the backers of these controls or bans are overlooking is that the shooters are not following current laws, what makes them think criminals will follow any new gun laws?

In Seattle it all seems to be driven by the shooting at the Folklife Festival where the shooter accidentally discharged his weapon as he pistol-whipped someone.  (Pretty stupid).  This Perpetrator was reportdedly not legally supposed to own or carry a gun in the first place due to mental problems.

No matter how many different we ban, criminals will still get their hands on them and use them in crimes.  Bans will only keep law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves.

There may be real solutions to problems in our society, lets look for ways to address the real issues instead of restricting our citizens’ rights.

Carry Your Gun to Work?

written by Oly Gun
1 Comment, Join in »

Legislators and corporate America want to make it legal for your employer to fire you if you have a gun in your car when you come to work.

Not cool.  I have a concealed pistol license and use it responsibly.  I have the right to have a gun in my car when going to and coming home from work.  Take away my right to keep it in my car while at work and you infringe on my right to protect myself on my way home from the office.

The cases I see cited to support this anti-gun movement are being mis-used.  The main instance cited is when a Lockheed Martin employee went out to his truck and returned to shoot fellow employees.  This guy didn’t go out and get his self-defense pistol, he wielded a shotgun and a semi-auto rifle.

This employee had obviously been building up to this for quite some time.  He was not carrying those to protect himself during his commute, and he did not carry this out without forethought.  Do you think he was concerned with whether he would be fired for this or not?

A rule banning firearms in trucks would not have stopped this man from doing what he did, it will only prevent law abiding citizens from protecting themselves.

How to Lock Them Up?

written by Oly Gun
No comments yet. »

For those of us who own the question of where and how to store them is one that deserves a lot of attention.  Just leaning against the wall behind the door, or in a drawer, or hiding it under the bed is just a bad idea.  Many people keep them in their closet (out of sight, out of mind).  These tactics are cheap and convenient in some ways, but dangerous.

Federal law dictates that gun locks must be available wherever guns are sold.  These locks are designed to prevent the firearm from being loaded or operated.  Using these locking devices can add a level of safety to your home.  They will not keep your guns out of the wrong hands, but they can help prevent shots from being fired.

Gun safes and cabinets are a better way to keep guns out of the wrong hands.

Locking gun cabinets can keep children out of your gun collection, but they are not sturdy enough to keep a determined adult from getting in.  Cabinets are less expensive than safes, but they are not as secure.  Cabinets are not fireproof, they are lighter weight, they have relatively flimsy hinges and locking mechanisms.  All of this means that while they can help keep your kids safe they can’t help keep your guns safe.  They will burn in a fire, can be easily carted away as a unit, and can be busted open in a matter of seconds with a crow bar.

A quality gun safe is the very best way to keep people safe from your guns and keep your guns safe from people.  Most gun safes are fire proof so your investment will be protected in case of a house fire.  Gun safes are HEAVY.  While this means they are a lot of work to get into place, it also means a potential thief won’t be driving off with your entire collection.  The locking mechanisms used in safes (even the less expensive ones) are much sturdier than on a gun cabinet.  The locks are large and require a memorized code to operate.  The bolts that engage to hold the door closed are large and very strong.  The walls and doors of safes are much thicker, a crow bar will not pop them open.

While gun safes are the most expensive option here the added safety and security are well worth it!  If you can not afford a safe right now use a cabinet or individual locks to store your guns in the mean time, but upgrade to a safe as soon as possible!

Use Your Gun to NOT Shoot Somebody.

written by Oly Gun
No comments yet. »

Most of us who carry know what it means to brandish a weapon. If you pull a gun on someone you’d better be ready to shoot them. If you are not willing to follow through you could just be endangering yourself more by pulling a gun. Although just because you must be prepared to shoot an attacker if you rely on a gun to protect you, the goal is to quell the situation with no shots fired.

Criminals know that most people do not carry . They will not be expecting you to pull a revolver out of your belt or purse, but once they see your gun they have nothing to loose. You need to be sure you know what you are doing to be sure you have the advantage.

If you are unsure of yourself, you could find your gun being used against you in the hands of your attacker. If you appear to not know what you are doing the criminal will feel more confident about disarming you. And less concerned about you hitting him if you decide to shoot.

Almost everyone knows that most gun owners are relatively poor shots especially when stressed. An attacker will take advantage of this statistic and assume you are more likely to mis him than any other outcome.

Now, that same perp will feel a lot less sure of himself if he sees the little red dot of your laser sight hovering on his chest. The same poor shooter can become an ace when using a laser sight. Just put the dot where you want the bullet to go and pull the trigger.

This can stop an attacker cold. The chances of you missing the shot using the laser sight are next to zero compared to without it.

The point here is not that you want to shoot them, but to convince them that if you do shoot they will be hit. The majority of situations will be dissolved with no shot fired with the use of a laser sight.

This should be all of our ultimate goal, to quell the situation without having to shoot anyone or anything.

Please take a handgun safety course before you decide to carry a gun or to use one in your home.  Even well trained military and law enforcement officers can make mistakes due to a stressful situation.
